AFDD Consumer Units in Brighton & Hove

An arc fault detection device listens to every circuit for the electrical signature of arcing: a damaged cable, a chewed patch of insulation, a loose terminal, a flex crushed behind the sofa. It disconnects in a fraction of a second, before the arc becomes a fire. We fit AFDD consumer units across Brighton & Hove, fully tested, certified and notified under Part P.

The service

The fire your fuse box cannot see coming

Almost every electrical fire starts the same way: not with a bang, but with a tiny, persistent arc. A cable nicked by a picture hook in a Hanover terrace, insulation nibbled by mice under a Kemptown floor, a terminal that worked loose a decade ago, a flex flattened behind a wardrobe. The arc chars its surroundings a little more every day, and nothing in an ordinary fuse board reacts, because hidden wiring damage like this draws perfectly normal current.

An AFDD, or arc fault detection device, is the answer. It samples the current waveform thousands of times a second and recognises the ragged, high frequency signature of a dangerous arc, then disconnects the circuit before smouldering turns to flame. Amendment 2 of BS 7671 recommends AFDDs on socket circuits in HMOs, high rise buildings and homes with a sleeping risk, which describes a great deal of Brighton & Hove.

We build arc fault detection into full consumer unit replacements, or concentrate it on the circuits that need it most. Either way the job is fixed price, takes a day, and every board includes a Type 2 surge protection device, full testing, an Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification.

Safety aspects

What arc fault detection actually protects you from

This is the electrical fire prevention case in plain English. Arcing is the fault your existing protection was never designed to notice, and here is exactly where an AFDD steps in.

  1. Arcs behind plaster are invisible until smoke A failing joint can arc inside a wall for months with nothing to see from the room. An AFDD recognises the distinctive waveform signature of that arc within seconds and disconnects the circuit while it is still a scorch mark, not a fire.
  2. It sees what RCDs and MCBs cannot A series arc across a broken conductor draws normal current and leaks nothing to earth, so the breaker and the RCD both stay closed while it burns. Arc fault detection is the only device in the board that reacts to it.
  3. Sleeping above unknown wiring In Brighton & Hove's HMOs and student lets around Moulsecoomb and the Lewes Road, tenants sleep over circuits nobody has seen in decades. Amendment 2 of BS 7671 recommends AFDDs on socket circuits precisely because a fire at night gives no warning.
  4. Period property, period cable Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Hanover and Kemptown carry long hidden runs of aged cable, sometimes nibbled by rodents under the floors, and salt air near the seafront corrodes terminals from Hove to Rottingdean. This is exactly the hidden wiring damage AFDDs exist to catch.
  5. Three protections in one device A combined RCBO and AFDD stacks shock protection, overload protection and arc fault detection in a single module, so every circuit it covers is guarded against electrocution, overheating and fire at the same time.
  6. It checks itself, and we check it Every AFDD runs a continuous self test and flags any internal fault on the device. We verify each one on handover, record the results on your certificate, and show you what the indicators mean before we leave.
Why here

Built for Brighton & Hove's housing stock

Arc fault protection makes sense anywhere, but Brighton & Hove stacks the risk factors unusually high: old walls, hidden cable runs, packed rental housing and a salty wind off the sea. These are the homes where we recommend an AFDD consumer unit first.

  • Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Hanover, Kemptown and Seven Dials, where cable runs predate everyone living above them
  • HMOs and student lets around Moulsecoomb and Lewes Road, where occupants sleep over wiring nobody has inspected
  • Seafront and clifftop homes from Hove to Rottingdean and Saltdean, where salt air corrodes accessories and terminations
  • Lofts, cellars and underfloor voids with any history of mice or rats
  • Rooms where heavy furniture sits on flexes and extension leads chain together
  • Any home where bedrooms sit above circuits you have never seen

Read the warnings

Warning signs your fuse box gives before a fire

Electrical fires rarely arrive without notice. A fuse box buzzing or crackling behind its cover is usually a loose terminal arcing thousands of times a minute. A fuse box getting hot to the touch is pushing current through a connection that resists it, and resistance is heat. And if your fuse box smells of burning, hot plastic, fish, or something sharp and acrid, insulation is already cooking somewhere inside. These are not quirks to live with. They are the last warnings a board gives.

Any of these signs, and certainly a fuse box sparking or showing scorch marks, is an emergency rather than a maintenance job. Switch off at the main switch if you can do so safely, keep the cover closed, and call us on 0333 360 8691. We answer 8am to 8pm, 7 days, and we reach emergencies anywhere in Brighton & Hove in 45 to 90 minutes.

The uncomfortable truth is that these are only the faults loud enough for human senses. For every fuse box overheating visibly, others arc away in silence inside walls and floors, with no smell, no sound and no warmth where a hand could find it. That is the gap an AFDD closes: it recognises the electrical signature of an arc long before your ears or nose could, and disconnects the circuit while the damage is still invisible. Fixing the symptom is urgent. An AFDD board is the permanent protection.

Symptom checklist

Look, listen and smell

  • Buzzing, humming or crackling from the board, especially a noise that comes and goes with one appliance
  • A smell of burning around the unit: hot plastic, a fishy odour or an acrid edge to the air
  • A case, breaker or fuse carrier that feels warm or hot to the touch
  • Scorch marks or brown staining around fuses, breakers or cable entries
  • Sparks, flashes or pops from inside or around the unit
  • Melted, softened or distorted plastic anywhere on the board
  • Breakers that trip again the moment they are reset, or fuses that blow repeatedly

AFDD consumer unit FAQs

In most owner occupied homes, no. Amendment 2 of BS 7671 recommends arc fault detection devices on socket circuits in HMOs, high rise buildings and other homes with a sleeping risk, and building types like student accommodation are treated more strictly. For an ordinary Brighton & Hove house they are a recommendation rather than a rule, in the same way smoke alarms once were. For an HMO or student let in Brighton & Hove we think the case is strong enough that we always raise it, and many local landlords now specify AFDDs at every board change.

Far less than their early reputation suggests. Normal household arcs from drill motors, vacuum cleaners and light switches have a recognisable pattern, and a modern AFDD compares what it hears against the signature of a dangerous arc before it acts. When one of our Brighton & Hove customers reports repeat tripping, the device has usually found something real: we have traced trips to a nail through a cable in Preston Park and a flattened flex under a bed in a Kemptown flat. If a device ever does misbehave, we investigate under the 6 year workmanship guarantee rather than leaving you to live with it.

The risk is lower in newer wiring, but it never reaches zero. Arc faults come from life as much as age: a screw through a cable during shelf fitting, a flex crushed behind a sofa, insulation chewed by mice in a loft. In a newer Patcham or Portslade home we would usually suggest arc fault detection on bedroom and socket circuits, which starts at £845, rather than the full board. In a period property, or anywhere people sleep in rooms above old wiring, the full RCBO and AFDD board from £1,095 is the option we would pick for our own families.

Socket circuits first, because that is where flexes get crushed behind furniture, plugs work loose and extension leads chain together. Circuits serving bedrooms matter most of all, since a fire that starts while people sleep spreads before anyone smells it. Long cable runs through the floors and voids of Victorian terraces in Hanover and Kemptown are also prime candidates, as is anything feeding an HMO letting room. Fixed lighting circuits carry the least risk, which is why our selected circuit option concentrates arc fault detection where it earns its keep.

Treat it seriously. A healthy consumer unit is silent, so a fuse box making noise, whether a buzz, a hum or a crackle, usually means a loose connection arcing behind the cover, and arcing is how most electrical fires begin. Do not open the board to investigate. Call us on 0333 360 8691, we answer 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week, and we reach emergencies across Brighton & Hove in 45 to 90 minutes.

Turn the installation off at the main switch if you can reach it safely, leave the cover alone, and call us straight away on 0333 360 8691. A burning smell from a fuse box, often hot plastic or an oddly fishy odour, means insulation is overheating at that moment, not at some point in the future. We treat it as an emergency, typically with us on site anywhere in Brighton & Hove within 45 to 90 minutes.

Mild warmth near a heavily loaded circuit can be normal, but a consumer unit overheating, with a case or breaker that is uncomfortable to touch, points to a loose or corroded connection resisting the current passing through it. Resistance makes heat, heat loosens terminals further, and left alone the cycle ends in a burnt fuse box. Switch off what you can, call us, and we will inspect it. A fuse box getting hot has never once fixed itself.

Replacement, almost always. Heat fierce enough to leave a burnt or melted fuse box has usually damaged the busbar, the terminals and the enclosure itself, and no honest electrician can certify that as safe again. A damaged fuse box is also evidence that its connections were failing, so we fit a new board, test every circuit and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate with Part P notification. Dual RCD replacements start from £425 if budget is tight, and every board includes a Type 2 surge protection device.
